Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature (the Serpent) rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen Romans 1:24-25
The lusts of the heart are a focused passion built on strong feelings. Lusts of the heart are dangerous because our hearts are DECEITFUL and our hearts are desperately sick (Jeremiah 17:9)
Our hearts will lead us astray if we do not lead them.
Eve allowed the lusts of her heart take over. She saw that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was a delight to the eyes, she saw that it could make her wise. In her own pride she decided that her way was better than Gods way.
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
Eve did what was right in her own eyes.
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. Genesis 3:6
The thing that has stood out to me in my studies of the Fall is that God didn’t stop Eve and he could have. He let her have what her heart desired. God is not after a forced obedience. He doesn’t want robots or else he would have created robots. He is after our whole hearts. God also doesn’t want a part-time lover while we pursue our sinful desires. He wants ALL of us, our hearts, our souls, our minds and our strength.
God allowed Eve to choose the corrupted desires of her heart, and eat of the fruit the Serpent offered her. He allowed her to choose the counterfeit promises over a loving relationship with her Creator.
They exchanged the truth, for a lie. Romans 1:25
Our generation is no different.
How many times have I watched a broken contrite heart draw near to God. I have watched God draw near to them. I have watched God lovingly heal hurts, and put hearts back together. Once life gets better, how many times have I seen the liar come in with another counterfeit promise.
And no matter what warnings I shout out, the enemy has them in his grip again. He has muffled their hearing, and blinded their eyes.
In great pain I watch my brothers and sisters exchange the truth of God for another lie.
Satan will come in over and over again. Repackaging the same lies in different packages. Attempting to lure us in with the same desires.
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. (ESV) James 1:14–15
Every single one of our desires is corrupt unless it falls under submission to Gods commands.
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 16:25
James goes on to say:
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. James 1:16-17
The truth is if you are disobeying God in your life right now, you are deceived. You are worshipping and serving the creature (the same crafty Serpent that deceived Eve) rather than the Creator!
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17
